There's such a tornado of press coverage over
the vaunted Iowa Caucuses tonight, I think I'll skip right to the interesting bit -- the
etymology of the word "caucus." If you, like me, assumed it had to be Latinate in origin, try this:
"Etymology uncertain. Mr. J. H. Trumbull finds the origin of caucus in the N. A. Indian word cawcawwassough or ca['u] cau-as'u, one who urges or pushes on, a promoter." Straight from Webster's!
