Can't it be redeemed purely for its second life in "Old School," in the excellent bit spoofing "The Graduate"? I think so. The list of the 50 Worst Songs Ever puts Starship's "We Built This City" rightfully at #1, but skewers Bobby McFerrin with a #7 finish for "Don't Worry Be Happy," which, though simplistic, is actually less grating now, I would argue, than it was back in its 80's heavy rotation. Plus, McFerrin is a decent musician, unlike 90% of the other folks on this list (Wang Chung, people?).
