Some women never learned to type because they didn't want to wind up working as a secretary (note that these days a steady gig making $60K as a legal sec. doesn't seem so bad). My mom always hounded me to take a typing class in school, and I refused out of laziness and a vague feminist sensibility. Now I can type really fast, though improperly, thanks to my internet addiction! And it appears that typing is becoming a lost basic skill, sort of like cursive handwriting and common courtesy.
